When pre-fight anxiety takes over

Pre-fight nerves are common. But when anxiety becomes intense, it can affect sleep, training, focus, confidence and enjoyment of the sport.

Boxing anxiety can show up as:

  • Feeling sick, shaky or panicked before a bout

  • Difficulty sleeping in the days before a fight

  • Fear of being hit, hurt or knocked out

  • Worry about losing in front of coaches, teammates, family or spectators

  • Overthinking an opponent or imagining worst-case scenarios

  • Feeling frozen during the walkout or before the bell

  • Losing composure after taking a shot or making a mistake

  • Fear of letting down a coach, gym or team

  • Doubting your fitness, skills or preparation

  • Feeling confident in sparring but overwhelmed in competition

  • Replaying a previous loss, injury or difficult bout

Support for boxing confidence and mental focus

Clive has a particular interest in anxiety, panic attacks, overthinking and confidence. Sessions are tailored to your experience, goals and level of competition.

Hypnotherapy may support the mental side of boxing by helping you work on:

  • Settling pre-fight nerves

  • Reducing unhelpful self-talk

  • Staying focused on the present moment

  • Managing adrenaline more calmly

  • Trusting the training and preparation already completed

  • Regaining focus after an error or difficult round

  • Managing fear of embarrassment or letting people down

  • Returning to training after a loss or setback

The aim is not to encourage unnecessary risk or guarantee a win. It is to help you develop a calmer, clearer mindset within properly coached and regulated sport.

Hypnotherapy complements safe coaching and medical care

Hypnotherapy does not replace qualified boxing coaching, safe training, protective equipment, medical clearance, concussion assessment, injury management or professional sporting advice.

Do not train or compete if you have been advised not to by a qualified medical professional. If you have had a head injury, concussion symptoms, chest pain, severe anxiety symptoms or other health concerns, seek appropriate medical advice.

A calm, private approach

Sessions are private, respectful and non-judgmental. For competitors under 18, a parent or guardian is involved in arranging the appointment, while the young athlete is encouraged to help set the goals they want to work towards.

Hypnotherapy does not involve touch, medication or physical procedures. You remain aware and in control throughout the session.

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy help with boxing fight anxiety?

Hypnotherapy may help boxers work on confidence, performance pressure, overthinking and the physical anxiety response connected with competing. Sessions are tailored to the individual competitor. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

I am confident in sparring but panic before a fight. Can this help?

Many boxers feel comfortable in the gym but experience a stronger anxiety response when a bout is scheduled or people are watching. The session can focus on the thoughts, sensations and pressure that appear in competition.

Can hypnotherapy help with fear of being hit?

Fear of injury is a serious and understandable concern in combat sport. Hypnotherapy may help you work on competition anxiety, but it does not remove the need for safe coaching, protective practices, medical clearance and informed decision-making.

Can it help after a loss or difficult fight?

A loss, injury or difficult experience can affect a boxer’s confidence. Hypnotherapy may help you work on unhelpful self-talk and return to training with a steadier mindset, where appropriate.

Can hypnotherapy guarantee I will win?

No. Sporting outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Hypnotherapy may support the mental side of performance, including confidence, focus and handling nerves.

Is this suitable for teenage boxers?

Sessions can be adapted for teenagers in an age-appropriate way. A parent or legal guardian is involved in arranging appointments for competitors under 18.

Will I be asleep or out of control?

No. Hypnosis is not sleep. You remain aware, can hear what is being said and stay in control throughout the session.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your goals, circumstances and individual response to the work. No specific number of sessions or outcome can be guaranteed.

Are online appointments available?

Online appointments may be available in suitable circumstances. Please enquire to discuss whether an online appointment is appropriate for you.

Are reviews and video testimonials available?

Yes. Google reviews and video testimonials from real clients are available to view. Every competitor and situation is different, so testimonials are not a guarantee of a particular result.
