When a gymnastics mental block appears

A mental block can be upsetting and confusing. A gymnast may know they have performed a skill safely many times before, yet suddenly feel unable to attempt it. The body may freeze, tense up, pull back at the last moment or feel overwhelmed with fear.

Mental blocks can sometimes follow a fall, injury, frightening experience, growth spurt, increased training pressure or a period away from the sport. They can also develop without an obvious single cause.

They may involve:

  • Fear of a skill previously performed confidently

  • Freezing before tumbling, vault, beam, bars or floor routines

  • Pulling out at the last moment

  • Fear of falling, landing badly or getting hurt

  • Loss of confidence after an injury or frightening incident

  • Overthinking technique during training

  • Anxiety before competitions or performances

  • Fear of disappointing coaches, parents or teammates

  • Becoming upset, frustrated or embarrassed about the block

  • Comparing yourself with other gymnasts

  • Feeling confident in some skills but not others

Support for gymnastics confidence and performance anxiety

Clive has a particular interest in anxiety, panic attacks, overthinking and confidence. Sessions are tailored to the gymnast’s experience, goals and level of competition.

Hypnotherapy may support the mental side of performance by helping a gymnast work on:

  • Reducing fear and unhelpful self-talk

  • Regaining a sense of calm before training

  • Managing pressure and expectations

  • Processing the emotions connected with a fall, injury or setback

  • Rebuilding confidence gradually

  • Staying present rather than imagining what could go wrong

  • Responding more calmly to physical anxiety sensations

  • Returning attention to safe, coach-led skill progression

The aim is not to force a gymnast through a block or make them attempt unsafe skills. It is to support confidence and emotional wellbeing alongside qualified coaching and safe progression.

Safety comes first

Hypnotherapy does not replace qualified gymnastics coaching, physical preparation, spotting, safety equipment, injury management, concussion assessment or medical advice.

A gymnast should only return to skills when cleared and guided by appropriately qualified coaches and, where relevant, medical or allied-health professionals. If a mental block follows a head injury, concussion, significant fall or ongoing pain, seek appropriate medical advice.

A calm, private approach

Sessions are private, respectful and non-judgmental. For gymnasts under 18, a parent or guardian is involved in arranging the appointment, while the young person is encouraged to help set the goals they want to work towards.

Hypnotherapy does not involve touch, medication or physical procedures. You remain aware and in control throughout the session.

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy help with gymnastics mental blocks?

Hypnotherapy may help gymnasts work on confidence, anxiety, overthinking and the emotional response connected with a mental block. Sessions are tailored to the individual gymnast. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

My child could do the skill before but now freezes. Can this help?

This is a common experience with a mental block. The session can explore the anxiety and emotions connected with the skill while supporting the child’s confidence and safe, coach-led return to training.

Can hypnotherapy help after a fall or injury?

A fall or injury can affect confidence. Hypnotherapy may help a gymnast work on the anxiety or self-talk connected with the experience, but it does not replace medical assessment, rehabilitation, clearance or safe coaching.

Will hypnotherapy make my child attempt a skill before they are ready?

No. The purpose is not to force a child through fear or push them into unsafe activity. Skill progression must remain guided by qualified coaches and appropriate health professionals.

Can it help with competition nerves?

Yes. Sessions may support gymnasts who feel anxious about performing routines, being watched, making errors or meeting expectations in competition.

Is this suitable for junior and teenage gymnasts?

Yes. Sessions can be adapted for children and teenagers in an age-appropriate way. A parent or legal guardian is involved in arranging appointments for gymnasts under 18.

Will I be asleep or out of control?

No. Hypnosis is not sleep. You remain aware, can hear what is being said and stay in control throughout the session.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on the gymnast’s goals, circumstances and individual response to the work. No specific number of sessions or outcome can be guaranteed.

Are online appointments available?

Online appointments may be available in suitable circumstances. Please enquire to discuss whether an online appointment is appropriate for you or your child.

Are reviews and video testimonials available?

Yes. Google reviews and video testimonials from real clients are available to view. Every gymnast and situation is different, so testimonials are not a guarantee of a particular result.
