Practising hypnotherapy since 2013, Clive supports junior, teenage and adult swimmers with race-day nerves, overthinking, self-doubt and confidence under pressure.

From 1 October 2026, appointments will be available from Room 9 at Perfect Wellness, 148 Arthur Terrace, Red Hill QLD 4059. Online appointments may also be available where suitable.

When swimming race nerves take over

A swimmer may train strongly, know their race plan and feel ready—then become anxious as the event gets closer. The pressure of the starting blocks, the crowd, lane allocations, times and expectations can make it difficult to perform freely.

Race anxiety can show up as:

  • Feeling sick, shaky or tense before a race

  • Fear of the starting blocks or the starter’s signal

  • Worry about false starts or a poor dive

  • Anxiety about being watched by coaches, parents or other swimmers

  • Fear of not meeting a time or personal best

  • Overthinking technique during a race

  • Comparing yourself with other swimmers

  • Losing confidence after a poor swim

  • Anxiety in finals, carnivals, trials or representative events

  • Difficulty sleeping before competition

  • Performing well in training but struggling at meets

Support for swimming confidence and focus

Clive has a particular interest in anxiety, panic attacks, overthinking and confidence. Sessions are tailored to the swimmer’s experience, goals and level of competition.

Hypnotherapy may support the mental side of swimming by helping a swimmer work on:

  • Settling nerves before an event

  • Feeling more confident on the blocks

  • Reducing negative self-talk

  • Staying focused on their own race plan

  • Managing pressure around times, selection or expectations

  • Letting go of a disappointing swim

  • Returning to the next race with a clearer mindset

  • Trusting the work already completed in training

The aim is not to promise personal bests, medals or selection. It is to help the swimmer develop a calmer, more focused response when pressure appears.

Hypnotherapy complements coaching and training

Hypnotherapy does not replace coaching, water-safety requirements, technical practice, strength and conditioning, injury management or professional sporting advice. It may complement these supports by helping with anxiety and overthinking that can interfere with performance.

A calm, private approach

Sessions are private, respectful and non-judgmental. For swimmers under 18, a parent or guardian is involved in arranging the appointment, while the young swimmer is encouraged to help set the goals they want to work towards.

Hypnotherapy does not involve touch, medication or physical procedures. You remain aware and in control throughout the session.

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy help with swimming race anxiety?

Hypnotherapy may help swimmers work on confidence, pressure, overthinking and the physical anxiety response connected with racing. Sessions are tailored to the individual swimmer. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

I swim well at training but feel anxious at carnivals. Can this help?

Many swimmers feel relaxed in training but become tense at meets because of the crowd, race times, competition or expectations. Sessions can focus on the thoughts and pressure that appear in these situations.

Can this help with fear of the starting blocks?

Some swimmers feel particularly anxious before a dive or starting signal. Hypnotherapy may help with the anxiety connected with this moment, alongside safe coaching and regular technical practice.

Can hypnotherapy help after a disappointing race?

A poor race, missed time or disappointing result can affect confidence. Hypnotherapy may help a swimmer work on unhelpful self-talk and return their attention to the next training session or opportunity.

Can hypnotherapy guarantee faster race times?

No. Sporting results cannot be guaranteed. Hypnotherapy may support the mental side of performance, including confidence, focus and handling nerves.

Is this suitable for junior and teenage swimmers?

Yes. Sessions can be adapted for children and teenagers in an age-appropriate way. A parent or legal guardian is involved in arranging appointments for swimmers under 18.

Will I be asleep or out of control?

No. Hypnosis is not sleep. You remain aware, can hear what is being said and stay in control throughout the session.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your goals, the level of anxiety and your individual response to the work. No specific number of sessions or outcome can be guaranteed.

Are online appointments available?

Online appointments may be available in suitable circumstances. Please enquire to discuss whether an online appointment is appropriate for you or your child.

Are reviews and video testimonials available?

Yes. Google reviews and video testimonials from real clients are available to view. Every swimmer and situation is different, so testimonials are not a guarantee of a particular result.
