What is target panic?

Target panic is a term used by many archers and precision-sport athletes to describe an unwanted anxiety response around aiming or releasing. A competitor may feel rushed, freeze, lose control of their normal routine or become unable to settle on the target as they once could.

It can be frustrating because the athlete often knows their technique and has performed well before. The harder they try to force the shot, the more tension and self-doubt can build.

Target panic may involve:

  • Feeling rushed to release or shoot

  • Difficulty holding steadily on the target

  • Fear of missing or making a poor shot

  • Tightness, shaking or a racing heart

  • Freezing or being unable to begin the normal routine

  • Overthinking technique during competition

  • Worry about being watched or judged

  • Loss of confidence after a poor performance

  • Anxiety before tournaments, trials or important events

  • Performing well in practice but struggling under pressure

  • Replaying bad shots repeatedly in the mind

Support for target panic and performance anxiety

Clive has a particular interest in anxiety, panic attacks, overthinking and confidence. Sessions are tailored to the athlete’s experience, sport and goals.

Hypnotherapy may support the mental side of precision performance by helping you work on:

  • Reducing unhelpful self-talk

  • Settling physical anxiety and tension

  • Rebuilding confidence in your established routine

  • Staying present rather than focusing on the outcome

  • Handling pressure in competitions

  • Recovering after a poor shot or disappointing result

  • Feeling less overwhelmed by the target or release moment

  • Returning attention to safe, coach-led skill development

The aim is not to guarantee scores, accuracy, selection or results. It is to help you develop a calmer, more focused response when performance pressure appears.

Hypnotherapy complements coaching and safety

Hypnotherapy does not replace qualified coaching, range rules, technical training, safe equipment handling, medical assessment or professional sporting advice.

All archery and target shooting must take place in properly supervised, legal and safe settings. Skill progression and equipment use should always follow the guidance of qualified coaches, clubs and governing bodies.

A calm, private approach

Sessions are private, respectful and non-judgmental. For athletes under 18, a parent or guardian is involved in arranging the appointment, while the young person is encouraged to help set the goals they want to work towards.

Hypnotherapy does not involve touch, medication or physical procedures. You remain aware and in control throughout the session.

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy help with target panic?

Hypnotherapy may help athletes work on anxiety, overthinking, tension and confidence around aiming and performance. Sessions are tailored to the individual competitor. Results vary and cannot be guaranteed.

Is target panic just a technical problem?

Target panic can involve technical, psychological and situational factors. Hypnotherapy may support the anxiety and confidence side, but it does not replace qualified coaching or technical practice.

I perform well in training but struggle in competition. Can this help?

Many precision-sport athletes feel more relaxed in practice but become tense when scores, selection or spectators are involved. The session can focus on the thoughts and pressure that appear in competition.

Can it help after a run of bad shots?

A difficult performance can make an athlete doubt their ability and expect another mistake. Hypnotherapy may help you work on unhelpful self-talk and return attention to your process, rather than replaying previous errors.

Can hypnotherapy guarantee better accuracy or scores?

No. Sporting outcomes cannot be guaranteed. Hypnotherapy may support the mental side of performance, including confidence, focus and handling nerves.

Is this suitable for junior and teenage athletes?

Yes. Sessions can be adapted for children and teenagers in an age-appropriate way. A parent or legal guardian is involved in arranging appointments for athletes under 18.

Will I be asleep or out of control?

No. Hypnosis is not sleep. You remain aware, can hear what is being said and stay in control throughout the session.

How many sessions will I need?

This depends on your goals, circumstances and individual response to the work. No specific number of sessions or outcome can be guaranteed.

Are online appointments available?

Online appointments may be available in suitable circumstances. Please enquire to discuss whether an online appointment is appropriate for you or your child.

Are reviews and video testimonials available?

Yes. Google reviews and video testimonials from real clients are available to view. Every athlete and situation is different, so testimonials are not a guarantee of a particular result.
